Plan 01

1 day in Mukteshwar

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, cliffs and a clear sunset

Reach Mukteshwar by mid-morning, or stay overnight nearby and start early. Climb the stone steps to Mukteshwar Dham at an easy pace, then walk to Chauli Ki Jali for the views. After a long lunch and rest, ask permission for a short walk around the IVRI campus buildings, or drive to the orchard lanes of Sitla. End at a viewpoint for sunset and head back before the roads are dark.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mukteshwar Dham45–60 minutesModerateEarly morning; clear weather October to November and March to May
Chauli Ki Jali45–90 minutesModerateLate afternoon for light and sunset; clear days in autumn and spring

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mukteshwar Dham: The approach is a stone staircase with no lift and few places to sit, at an altitude where older visitors tire sooner than they expect. Go slowly, carry water, and consider stopping partway; the lower viewpoints are rewarding even if you do not reach the top.

With parents at Chauli Ki Jali: The paths are uneven and the cliff edges are exposed, with no railings at many points. Older visitors and young children should stay on the broader paths, avoid the edge and go with someone steady. Wind can be strong and rock is slippery after rain.

Plan 02

2 days in Mukteshwar

  1. 01

Day 1: Hilltop temple and cliffs

Start at sunrise from a Himalayan viewpoint if the weather is clear, then take breakfast and visit Mukteshwar Dham in the morning. Walk to Chauli Ki Jali, keeping away from the edges, and rest in the afternoon. Visit the IVRI campus by prior permission if possible, and finish with sunset from the rocks.

    Day 2: Forest and orchards

Take a guided forest walk to Bhalu Gaad Waterfall in the morning if you are fit, or choose a gentler orchard walk around Sitla instead. After lunch, drive to Ramgarh for orchards and its literary connections, or simply rest at the hotel before heading home.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bhalu Gaad Waterfall2–3 hours including the walkDemandingPost-monsoon (October) and spring; mornings

Pace: Bhalu Gaad Waterfall involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Bhalu Gaad Waterfall: The path goes through forest with roots, loose stones and some descent, and has to be climbed back. Older visitors and anyone with knee trouble should skip the walk or turn back early. A guide helps and sturdy shoes are essential.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Mukteshwar trip for parents and children

  • Keep the road transfer manageable: Kathgodam to Mukteshwar is about 65 km of winding hill road, so break the journey with a stop and avoid arriving after dark.
  • The temple has a stone staircase and little seating. Go early, rest at the turns and skip the final flight if you tire; the lower viewpoints are still rewarding.
  • At about 2,000 metres, evenings are cold even in summer, so pack warm layers, a cap and gloves, and ask your hotel about heating from October to March.
  • Avoid unfenced edges at Chauli Ki Jali and keep to broader paths, especially after rain.
  • Plan around weather: fog and rain in July to September make roads slippery and views disappointing.
  • Carry regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit and enough cash; there is no large hospital in the village, and the nearest major facilities are in Haldwani and Nainital.
