Why it matters

Why Marine Drive is worth your time

Marine Drive is Mumbai at its most civilised. It was planned in the 1920s as a modern promenade and remains the city's most continuous stretch of public seafront. The arc of the road and the apartment buildings behind it form the iconic 'Queen's Necklace' when seen from Malabar Hill at night, a shape that appears in countless Mumbai photographs and postcards.

For the city's residents, Marine Drive is where they walk to think, to talk, or simply to remember that Mumbai, despite its chaos, has a sea. It is also the edge where old Colaba meets new Bandra, where you can read the city's development in the architectural layers—Victorian warehouses, art deco palaces, and glass towers all visible together. The walk grounds visitors in what Mumbai's geography actually is: a narrow peninsula pressed between the Arabian Sea and the bay beyond.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start in Colaba in the early morning, either from the Gateway of India end or from Café Coffee Day near the Colaba police station. Walk northward along the curve, noticing how the road hugs the coastline and how the buildings transition from colonial to 1920s art deco to modern high-rises.

Stop at Girgaum Chowpatty midway for a rest and to watch the fishing boats. The steps here were where people once bathed; now vendors sell corn and pani puri from small stalls. Continue towards Bandra, where the walk climbs slightly towards the Bandra Reclamation area. If you time it right, the evening will turn golden and the city lights begin to sparkle across the bay.

The walk works best in pieces. Do Colaba to Chowpatty one morning, then tackle Chowpatty to Bandra another evening. Late morning through early afternoon is least pleasant due to heat and crowds.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early morning or after 5 pm; midday is too hot and crowded
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; the distance is longer than it looks
  • Carry water; official drinking fountains are few
  • The road is always busy; stick to the promenade side, not the traffic side
  • Vendors can be persistent, especially near Chowpatty; a polite no suffices
