The short answer

Sanjay Gandhi National Park: what visitors should know first

Yes, for a half or full day of green quiet. Keep to marked areas, go early, and note that most activities are closed on Mondays except Gandhi Tekdi and the Kanheri Caves.

History and context

The story behind Sanjay Gandhi National Park

The area was dedicated as Sanjay Gandhi National Park in 1981, after earlier names including Krishnagiri and Borivali National Park, and was later enlarged with forests from Thane division. Tulsi and Vihar lakes were developed in the 19th century for Mumbai's water supply. Monks carved the Kanheri Caves from basalt over many centuries, and they became an important centre of learning and pilgrimage.

Why it matters

Why Sanjay Gandhi National Park is worth your time

Few world cities have a forest of this size inside their limits, and fewer still one with big cats. The park protects the catchments that supply Mumbai's water and acts as a lung for the northern suburbs, and it receives around two million visitors a year.

It also connects the modern city to a much older one. The Kanheri Caves show that this ridge was a monastic and learning centre long before Bombay existed, so a single trip can combine wilderness, ancient Buddhist heritage and a sense of how the metropolis lives with its wild neighbours.

How to experience it

Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers about 104 square kilometres, with roughly 44 sq km in Mumbai Suburban district and the rest in Thane district. Its headquarters are at Borivali, which is the usual way in. Go early, when the forest is cool and the light is soft, and decide in advance what you want from the day.

The centrepiece is the Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist monastic complex carved from basalt, set in the middle of the park. It involves a climb and plenty of steps, so allow time and water. For a gentler option, spend the morning near the entrance, visit the lion and tiger safari (a captive lion safari has run since 1975, and the tiger safari was redesigned and reopened in 2024), and sit by the lakes of Tulsi and Vihar, which are part of Mumbai's water supply.

Be wary of wildlife. Leopards live here at high density, and conflicts with people have occurred around the edges, so keep to marked areas, avoid dusk and do not walk alone off trails.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
