Why it matters
Why Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is worth your time
Thane Creek shows how a wildlife refuge can survive inside a heavily built region. Greater and lesser flamingos both use the creek, and the Bombay Natural History Society counted more than 130,000 birds in 2022.
The sanctuary also protects mangroves, which buffer storms and filter the creek. For a visitor it is a rare chance to watch a large wildlife spectacle within reach of one of Asia's biggest cities, and to understand why the mudflats matter.

How to experience it
Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary was notified by Maharashtra on 6 August 2015, covering roughly 16.9 square kilometres along the western bank of the creek. About 9 sq km is mangrove forest and the rest is water, which makes it a working wetland rather than a landscaped park.
Go in the cooler months, when flamingos are present in the greatest numbers, and plan around the tide, because the birds feed on the mudflats and move with the water. Bring binoculars; a long lens helps if you photograph. Boat trips from the Airoli side are the closest way in, but operators vary, so choose one that publishes its safety and timing rules.
Keep distance and silence on the water. Flamingos spook easily, and the sanctuary exists because the habitat needs peace. If the boat cannot run, the sanctuary's edges and the Sewri mudflats offer shore views of the same birds.
Plan with confidence
