How to reach Munsiyari by air

The nearest airport is Naini Saini (NNS) at Pithoragarh, about 4.5 km from the town, with limited flights; check current service. Pantnagar (PGH) is the larger alternative. From either, allow many hours by road, as Munsiyari is about 135 km from Pithoragarh.

How to reach Munsiyari by train

The usual railhead is Kathgodam (KGM), about 275-300 km away; Tanakpur (TPU) is also used. From Kathgodam, shared jeeps and taxis run toward Munsiyari, usually leaving early in the morning.

How to reach Munsiyari by road

The usual route runs via Almora, Bageshwar or Chaukori, Thal, Birthi Falls and the Kalamuni pass. It is about 280 km from Kathgodam and can take 10 to 12 hours. Snow can block the pass in winter, and monsoon landslides can delay travel.

Getting around Munsiyari

The town is small and walkable on level ground, but the sights are spread out. Local taxis and jeeps serve Khaliya Top's trailhead, Thamri Kund and Darkot. A private car makes day outings easier.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Munsiyari

  • Allow at least two nights and an overnight en route; the drive from Kathgodam is long and tiring.
  • Avoid July and August; landslides can delay or block the road.
  • Carry cash and basic medicines; ATMs and chemists are limited.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
