The short answer
Nanachi Gate Safari: what visitors should know first
Choose Nanachi if you are already in south Kodagu, around Kutta or Virajpet, and want a safari without detouring to Hunsur or Kabini. Confirm with the Forest Department whether counter or online booking is open, because both have been reported closed at different times.
History and context
The story behind Nanachi Gate Safari
Nagarhole took its present shape over several decades: a Mysore royal hunting reserve, then a sanctuary in 1955, a national park in 1983 and a tiger reserve in 2003. Its expansion to about 848 sq km in 2012 brought more of the Kodagu-side forest into the protected block.

Why it matters
Why Nanachi Gate Safari is worth your time
Most visitors think of Nagarhole as one place, but the park is entered from several sides and each gate changes the trip. Nanachi ties the reserve to Kodagu: it is the logical gate for a traveller who has spent days among Coorg's coffee estates and wants to add a forest morning without a long transfer through Mysuru.
The forest here belongs to the same landscape as the Brahmagiri range and the Lakshmanatirtha catchment, which run towards Kerala, so the safari gives context to what you see elsewhere in south Kodagu. It is also a reminder that the park is a working protected area first and a tourist attraction second, with rules about vehicles, noise and timings that exist for good reason.

What not to miss
- 01
A Coorg-side entry

Combine with a falls visit
Irpu Falls lies in the same south Kodagu belt, so the two fit a single day with a rest in between.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Nanachi is the gate for visitors approaching from the Kodagu side of the reserve, usually from Virajpet, Gonikoppal or Kutta, and it is listed alongside Veeranahosahalli and Kakanakote as one of the three safari entry points. Because it sits in Kodagu rather than on the Mysuru highway, it works best when you are already staying in south Coorg and want one safari in the middle of a longer trip.
Plan to be at the gate at least half an hour before your slot with photo ID. Vehicle types and slot lengths vary by season and by what the department is running; sources report both morning and afternoon slots, usually about two to three hours each. Booking status also moves around, and online slots have been reported closed with counter tickets available at the gate, so keep a flexible plan and an alternative for the same day.
Inside you will find the same dry deciduous and moist forest mosaic that defines the park, with streams cutting through it. Sightings follow the park's general pattern, with elephants, gaur and deer most likely and large cats a bonus. Photographers should bring a long lens and patience rather than expectations.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Check the Forest Department for current booking status before you drive
- Leave generous time for winding Kodagu roads
- Bring photo ID and arrive 30 minutes early
- Have a backup plan if the slot is cancelled by weather
