The short answer
Veeranahosahalli Gate Safari: what visitors should know first
Go if you want Nagarhole's forest interior rather than the Kabini shoreline, and if you can manage a very early start. Book through the Karnataka Forest Department, arrive at least 30 minutes ahead with photo ID, and expect timings and vehicle types to change, so confirm before you travel.
History and context
The story behind Veeranahosahalli Gate Safari
Nagarhole was an exclusive hunting reserve of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore. It was set up as a wildlife sanctuary in 1955, upgraded to a national park in 1983, and declared a tiger reserve in 2003, with its area enlarged to about 848 sq km in 2012.
The Jenu Kuruba, traditionally honey gatherers, have long lived in and around the forest, and their relocation and return remain a live and contested issue.

Why it matters
Why Veeranahosahalli Gate Safari is worth your time
Nagarhole was once the hunting reserve of the Wodeyars, the rulers of Mysore, became a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and a national park in 1983, and was notified as a tiger reserve in 2003. Its present area of about 848 sq km makes it one of the larger forest blocks in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and the northern side shows what that means on the ground: continuous forest rather than a single reservoir shoreline.
For visitors the practical point is choice. The Kabini side is known for its water-edge elephant viewing, whereas Veeranahosahalli puts you into the drier interior, with different light, different tracks and a quieter feel. It is also the gate most sensible for a day out from Mysuru or Hunsur without an overnight stay, though an overnight gives you two safaris and a more relaxed pace.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Interior forest
Teak and bamboo tracks give a different feel from the Kabini shoreline, with more cover and fewer open vistas.
- 02
Gaur and elephant
These are the most frequent large sightings; the best viewing is often around tanks and waterholes late in the dry season.
- 03
Early light
The first morning slot catches mist, calling birds and cool air, which suits travellers who dislike afternoon heat.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as a morning or late-afternoon outing from a base in Hunsur, Mysuru or a lodge near the northern boundary. Drive to the Veeranahosahalli checkpost early, because the department asks guests to arrive at least 30 minutes before the safari, and carry the photo ID you used when booking. Safari starts are reported to be from a range office some distance inside the forest, so allow extra time beyond the gate itself.
Once inside, the habitat is mostly dry deciduous forest with teak, bamboo and open grassy clearings, interrupted by seasonal streams and tanks. Elephants and gaur are the likeliest large animals; chital, sambar and wild boar are routine, and tigers and leopards turn up occasionally. Do not treat a tiger as part of the deal. A calm drive with birds, langurs and a herd at a waterhole is a perfectly good result, and the guide or driver will usually stop for anything worth watching.
Older guides describe a Forest Department minibus and limited private-vehicle access with a mandatory guide, while a 2025 notice lists jeep, bus and boat categories. Ask which type is running at the gate you are using, and be flexible about the slot you get.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Confirm the gate, slot and vehicle type with the Forest Department before you drive
- Arrive 30 minutes early and carry the photo ID used for booking
- Wear muted colours and a layer for cold dawns
- Keep to the seat; do not stand or call out near animals
Know before you go
Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Hunsur taluk, Mysuru district, on the northern side of Nagarhole Tiger Reserve
- Time needed
- About 3 hours per safari, plus the approach and check-in
- Best time
- Morning or late-afternoon slots; November to February for comfort, March to May for animals near water
- Walking level
- Easy
- Senior comfort
- No walking on the safari itself, but forest tracks are bumpy, seats in the larger vehicles are hard and the early start means a cold, dark drive. Carry a shawl in winter, a cushion if your back is sensitive, and water. Toilets are limited once you are inside.
- Tickets and access
- The Karnataka Forest Department sells safari seats; per-person fees and slot timings were revised in 2025, so check the current rates, booking channel and whether counter tickets or online slots are open. Carry a valid photo ID. Camera fees may apply.

Is Veeranahosahalli the same as Kabini?
No. Kabini is the southern reservoir side, reached via Antharasante. Veeranahosahalli is the northern gate in Hunsur taluk and goes into the drier interior.
Can I see a tiger here?
It is possible but never guaranteed. Elephants and gaur are far more reliable, so plan for a good forest drive rather than a single animal.
Do I need to book ahead?
Slots are limited and the department recommends booking. Booking arrangements change, so check the official channel or the gate counter for current availability.
