How to experience it
Take the cable car or ropeway from Tallital early in the morning, before 9 am. The light at this hour is soft, and if there is frost or mist on the lower forests, you see the landscape in layers. From the top, the view opens to three valleys: the Kumaon hills in the middle distance, the Nainital lake below, and on very clear days, the snowy Himalayan crests on the horizon.
If cloud cover is heavy by 10 am—which is common, especially in monsoon or late spring—the view vanishes. Come prepared to go down and accept that some days the visibility simply does not allow it. When conditions are right, the scale of the landscape makes the Lake below seem tiny, and the view eastward into the Kumaon is vast.
There is a small food stall and shop at the top. Stay for chai and watch the light change, or walk the immediate slope if you have energy.
