Plan 01

1 day in Namakkal

  1. 01

    Day 1: Temples and fort

Visit the Narasimhaswamy and Anjaneyar temples first thing, while queues are short, then walk to the base of the rock for the fort if you are comfortable with steps. Have lunch in the town centre and rest through the afternoon. In the evening, return to the Anjaneyar temple when the evening rituals are on.

Plan 02

2 days in Namakkal

  1. 01

    Day 1: The rock

Narasimhaswamy temple, Anjaneyar temple and the Ranganatha cave temple in the morning, then the fort in a cooler hour.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Tiruchengode

Drive about 35 km to the Ardhanareeswarar temple on its hill, returning for a late lunch.

Plan 03

3 days in Namakkal

  1. 01

    Day 1: The rock

    Temples and fort as above.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Tiruchengode

    Ardhanareeswarar temple and town.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Kolli Hills

Start early for the long hairpin drive to the hills, with cooler air and waterfalls, and return before dark.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kolli Hills: The challenge is the long winding ascent, not the walking. Services on the hill are limited, so carry medicines and water.

Pacing

Pacing a Namakkal trip for parents and children

  • Visit the temples first thing; they are mostly level and shaded, unlike the fort.
  • The fort climb is on steep rock-cut steps in full sun. Skip the summit if stairs are hard; the temples at its foot are the main sights.
  • Temples close in the afternoon, so plan lunch and a rest between the morning and evening visits.
  • Carry water, and wear shoes that slip off easily for the temples.
  • For Kolli Hills, break the long hairpin drive with stops, and avoid it if motion sickness is a problem.
  • Heat: March to May is very hot. Visit the temples early and avoid the fort in the middle of the day.
