Namakkal is a district headquarters and a working trading town in western Tamil Nadu, best known for its egg and poultry industry and its transport trade. Visitors come for something older: a lone granite rock, about 75 metres high, that rises directly from the streets and has shaped the town's religious life and its defences for centuries.
At the foot of the rock stand two of Namakkal's most important sites. The Narasimhaswamy temple is a rock-cut Vishnu shrine that historians place between the sixth and eighth centuries, and the Anjaneyar temple, facing it, holds an image of Hanuman about 18 feet tall, carved from a single stone and open to the sky. A second rock-cut shrine, to Ranganatha, lies on the eastern side. The Namakkal Fort crowns the rock itself.
The town is compact and sights are close together, so a half-day is enough for the rock, the two temples and a meal. Namakkal sits roughly midway between Salem and Karur, and Tiruchengode's hilltop Shiva temple and the Kolli Hills make natural day trips.
Namakkal is hot for much of the year. Plan temple visits for the morning or early evening, when the temples reopen after the afternoon break, and keep time in hand for the fort climb, which is steep and exposed.
