The short answer

Namakkal Fort: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you are steady on steep steps. Go early, allow about an hour and a half, carry water and wear shoes with grip. If the climb is too much, the temples at the base give you the best of the site.

History and context

The story behind Namakkal Fort

The fort's construction date is uncertain but is placed in the seventeenth century. The district administration credits Ramachandra Nayakar, who ruled the area under Tirumala Nayaka, while another tradition names an official of a Mysore ruler.

By the eighteenth century the fort was linked to Mysore. The British captured it in 1768 and Hyder Ali retook it a few months later. After the defeat of Tipu Sultan it passed to the East India Company and was kept as a small military post.

Why it matters

Why Namakkal Fort is worth your time

The fort shows how a lone rock became a military post for successive rulers and why the town grew around it. It is a compact example of the hill forts of the Nayak and Mysore periods, small enough to understand in a single visit.

It also sits above two of the region's most important temples, so the rock links defence and worship in one place. Local tradition holds that the hill is a piece of mountain carried by Hanuman, which helps explain why the Anjaneyar temple stands beside it.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start from the base of the rock and take the narrow steps cut into the stone on the south-western side. The climb is short but steep and exposed, so go early, take water and rest at the turns. Mind your footing where the rock is worn or damp.

The summit is a fairly level area of about 1.5 acres, ringed by cut-stone walls with a brick parapet pierced for muskets, projecting bastions and cannon embrasures. Look for the ruined bomb-proof chamber and the roofless brick structure, once thought to be a treasury and now believed more likely to be a granary. There is a small Vishnu temple and a mosque inside.

A hidden gate on the north, known as the secret gate, probably served as an escape route. The views take in the whole of Namakkal and the surrounding plain, so choose a clear morning, and finish at the temples at the foot of the rock.

Plan with confidence
