The short answer

Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes, this is Namakkal's best-known site. It is level and easy, but busy on Saturdays and festival days. Go in the morning, dress modestly and expect to queue.

History and context

The story behind Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple

The image is said locally to date from the fifth century, but this is not firmly documented and the temple's construction date and builder are unknown. A legend links the site to the Narasimha temple opposite, where Lakshmi is said to have placed a Saligrama stone and Narasimha appeared. Worship continues daily under the state endowments department.

Why it matters

Why Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple is worth your time

The image is among the largest Hanuman figures in India and carved from a single stone. Its open setting and the way it faces the Narasimha shrine are central to local devotion and the temple's story.

Local tradition ties the site to a legend in which Hanuman carried the hill, and the town's name is linked to a sacred stone. For visitors, it is the place to watch everyday devotion in Namakkal, with families, drivers and traders stopping to pray.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive in the morning, when the courtyard is cooler. Footwear goes outside, and the stone floor is hot by midday. The image of Hanuman stands in the open, with no roof over the sanctum, wearing a garland and a sword. Take your time to look at its scale before joining the line.

The temple holds four daily rituals, reported at around 8 am, noon, 6 pm and 8.45 pm, each with decoration, offerings and lamp-waving. Check the current schedule locally. Devotees often bring garlands and offer them at the sanctum.

The Narasimhaswamy temple faces the sanctum about 130 metres away, so combine the two on the same visit. The main festival is Panguni Uthiram, held over fifteen days around March and April, when the deities are carried through the streets.

Plan with confidence
