Why it matters
Why Temi Tea Garden is worth your time
Temi is the only tea garden in Sikkim, and it was founded by the state's last ruler, Palden Thondup Namgyal. It shows another side of the district, an agricultural landscape of tea slopes and terraced fields rather than monasteries.
Visiting gives you a sense of how people in the hills earn a living, away from the pilgrim trail, and it makes a quiet, gentle outing that suits older travellers well. Tea is also one of the few things you can take home from Sikkim that was grown and processed in the state itself.

How to experience it
Drive up to the estate and begin at the visitor entrance, where a cafe looks out over the garden. Walk a short distance among the tea bushes and take in the long valley views.
If the factory is open to visitors, ask to see the process, from withering and rolling to drying. The estate produces about 100 tonnes of tea a year, and about three quarters is auctioned in Kolkata, so a small amount is sold as packaged tea.
Buy a packet of Temi tea to take home. It makes an easy pairing with Tarey Bhir or the Buddha Park near Ravangla.
