Area by area

Nameri neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Potasali (park edge)

Best for: Early rafting, birdwatching and quiet nights

Good to know: Camps and lodges sit near the range office on the Jia Bhoroli, including the eco camp, an ATDC resort and private camps listed by Assam Tourism. Facilities are basic, distances to hospitals are long, and weekends fill early, so book ahead.

  2. 02

    Tezpur

Best for: Comfort, medical access and a day-trip approach

Good to know: Staying in Tezpur gives better hotels and food and a short drive to Nameri, but you lose the early river start. Plan to leave early and allow time for the forest track.

Sights in this area: Bhalukpong, Nameri National Park

  3. 03

    Balipara and Chariduar approach

Best for: Travellers who want a stopover near the park road

Good to know: These small towns lie on the way to the park. Options are limited and simple, so confirm locally before relying on them.

  4. 04

    Bhalukpong (Arunachal Pradesh)

Best for: Combining Nameri with Tippi and Pakke

Good to know: A small river town across the border with modest stays. Check Arunachal entry permit rules first.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
