Before you go

Narkanda with elderly parents: what to know

  • Allow a full day in Shimla or Narkanda to acclimatise before long drives; altitude is moderate but cold nights can be harsh.
  • Visit Hatu by taxi rather than the trek. The road is steep and winding, and the temple area has uneven ground and few seats.
  • Avoid December to February unless you want snow and are comfortable with cold; roads can close without much notice.
  • Choose a hotel with working heating, hot water and a ground-floor or lift-served room.
  • Carry regular medicines and a layered, windproof wardrobe. Nearest major hospitals are in Shimla, about two hours away.
  • Keep the drive to daylight hours; hill roads, fog and rain make night travel tiring and risky.

Easiest first

Places in Narkanda sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Hatu Mata Temple (Places of worship · 20–40 minutes) — The approach from the car park is short, but the ground is uneven, cold and windy, with few places to sit. Older visitors can usually manage the temple itself if they take it slowly and wear warm clothes.
  • St Mary's Church, Kotgarh (Places of worship · 20–40 minutes) — The church is on a hillside, with a short walk from the road. Surfaces can be uneven and damp, and seating is limited. Most older visitors can manage if they take it slowly.
  • Tani Jubbar Lake (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The lake edge is mostly level and shaded, with a short walk from the road. Surfaces can be damp or icy, so wear grip. There is little seating, so carry a folding stool if needed.
  • Thanedar and Kotgarh apple orchards (Places to visit · Half to full day) — Mostly roadside and village stops with short walks on sloping, uneven paths. Seating is limited, so go by car and pick level stops. Hotels and retreats offer rest breaks.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Hatu Peak (Places to visit · 1.5–3 hours by taxi including stops) — The road is steep with sharp turns, and the top is cold, windy and uneven underfoot with few seats. A taxi to the top works for most older travellers, but skip the trek and carry a windproof layer. If anyone feels breathless at about 3,400 m, rest and drink water.
  • Narkanda ski slopes (Sports · Half a day for a lesson or snow play; 3 days for a short course) — Skiing itself is for fit visitors. Others can enjoy the snow at the edge of the slopes, but the ground is slippery, cold and exposed with few seats. Travel in the daytime only and wear shoes with good grip.
  • Parmajyoti Mandir, Barobagh (Places of worship · 30–60 minutes) — The path from the Thanedar playground is steep. Older visitors may find it tiring, and there are few places to sit. Go by car if a closer approach exists, and take it slowly.

Practical tips for Narkanda

  • Cold and snow. Even in summer nights are cool at this altitude. From December to February expect snow, sub-zero nights and possible road closures. Pack layers, a windproof jacket, a cap and shoes with good grip.
  • Getting in. Drive from Shimla on NH5; allow two to two and a half hours. State buses run along the route, but a private taxi gives flexibility for Hatu and Thanedar.
  • Hatu road. The road to the Hatu temple is steep and narrow and can be blocked after snowfall. Ask your hotel about conditions that morning, and go early when visibility is better.
  • Altitude. At about 2,700 m most people are fine, but rest on arrival, drink water and avoid heavy meals or hard exertion on the first day. Hatu is higher, at around 3,400 m.
  • Money and connectivity. Carry cash, as ATMs and card machines are limited in the smaller villages. Mobile coverage can be patchy off the highway, so download offline maps.
  • Booking. Hotel choice is small. Book ahead for the ski season and for apple-harvest weekends, and confirm heating and hot water.
  • Photography and dress. Dress modestly at temples and follow local rules about photography inside shrines. Views are usually best in the early morning, before cloud builds.
  • Skiing. The ski slope is run seasonally by HPTDC; check dates, equipment hire and course availability with them, because snow cover varies year to year.
