Narsinghgarh is a small town in Rajgarh district, on the Malwa plateau about 80 km north of Bhopal. It was founded in 1681 by Paras Ramji, a younger brother of the ruler of Rajgarh, and remained the seat of a princely state until 1948. The fort that his successors lived in until 1962 still stands on the hill above the town, with the lake that bears the founder's name spread out below it.
The pleasures here are modest and specific: walking the courtyards and terraces of the fort, watching the light change on Paras Ram Sagar, visiting old Shiva and Vishnu temples that locals still use, and spending a morning among the deer and birds of the nearby sanctuary at Chidikho. The town is sometimes called the Kashmir of Malwa, a boast that makes most sense just after the monsoon, when the hills are green and the lake is full.
This is not a place with a lot of tourist infrastructure. Opening hours, fees and facilities are often unpublished, hotels are limited, and signage is thin, so it works best as a day trip from Bhopal or an overnight stop on the road between Bhopal and Rajgarh. Go with a driver, start early and treat the details as something to confirm locally.
For older travellers the town is manageable if you are selective. The lake and the sanctuary roads are mostly level, the temples are small and close together, and only the fort and the hilltop shrine require real climbing. Plan one main activity in the morning, rest through the afternoon heat and return before dark.
