The short answer
Haldighati: what visitors should know first
Go if Mewar history interests you, and treat it as a half-day trip. The museums are small, so the setting and the story are the draw. Check opening hours locally.
History and context
The story behind Haldighati
The Battle of Haldighati took place on 18 June 1576 between Maharana Pratap of Mewar and a Mughal army led by Man Singh I, general of Emperor Akbar. Pratap's horse Chetak was fatally wounded and died, and Pratap built a small monument at the spot, which still stands.
The Government of India commissioned the Maharana Pratap National Memorial in 1997, and it opened in June 2009.

Why it matters
Why Haldighati is worth your time
Haldighati is central to the memory of Mewar's resistance to Mughal power, and Maharana Pratap remains a popular figure in Rajasthan. The pass links Rajsamand and Udaipur districts, so it appears on routes between the two.
For visitors, the interest lies in seeing the landscape that shaped the story: a narrow pass, hills and a yellow soil that colours the ground. It is a short history lesson in place, and a counterpoint to the temple-centred trip in Nathdwara.

How to experience it
Start with the Maharana Pratap National Memorial, which has a bronze statue of the Maharana on his horse, then see the Chetak cenotaph at the spot where the horse is said to have fallen. Private museums have audiovisual displays of the story, so choose one if you want an introduction.
Stand at the pass and look at the yellow soil that gave Haldighati its name, from the word for turmeric. The battle was fought on 18 June 1576 at Rakt Talai, near Khamnore, between Maharana Pratap and the Mughal army under Man Singh I.
Travel by car from Nathdwara or Udaipur, leave early and carry water. The drive is scenic through Aravalli country, and you can stop at Molela on the way if timing suits.
