Nathdwara is a town of about 42,000 people on the Banas river in Rajsamand district, roughly 48 km north of Udaipur. It exists because of one temple. In the later 17th century the image of Shrinathji, a child form of Krishna, was brought here from the Mathura region, and the town that grew around the haveli, its name meaning the gateway to Shrinathji, still runs on the temple's daily timetable.
That timetable is the best way to understand a visit. Worship is divided into eight short darshans, from the early Mangala to the evening Shayan, and the lanes around the temple fill and empty with them. Between darshans the town turns to its other trades: pichwai painters working at their studios, shops selling framed pictures of Shrinathji, and stalls selling hot snacks, jalebi and thandai.
Beyond the haveli there is a modest set of sights, among them the Statue of Belief, a 369-foot Shiva figure opened in 2022, and day trips to Kankroli's Dwarkadhish temple and Rajsamand Lake, the potters' village of Molela, Haldighati and Kumbhalgarh. None is far, but several involve a long day by road, so choose a few.
For older travellers and families, Nathdwara is manageable with planning. The temple involves queues, a crowd at the moment the curtain opens and a walk without footwear, but the town is compact and flat enough to cover on foot. Go on a weekday between November and February, avoid festival days unless you want the full spectacle, and keep afternoons for rest.
