Why it matters

Why Angurukaramulla Temple is worth your time

Negombo is called Little Rome, but it is not only Catholic. Wikipedia's 2012 census figure lists about 11 percent of residents as Buddhist, alongside Muslims, Hindus and other Christians, and Angurukaramulla is the Buddhist temple the encyclopedia names among the town's major sights.

Visiting it next to St. Mary's gives a fairer picture of local life. Negombo's communities live side by side, and temples, churches, a mosque and kovils all form part of the same streets. For Indian visitors, the Buddhist symbols will feel familiar.

What not to miss

    The seated Buddha

The main building holds the central image of devotion.

  2. 02

    The stupa

A white stupa stands within the compound, a focus for walking meditation and offerings.

  3. 03

    The quiet grounds

Away from the beach strip, the temple is calm and local.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go in the morning, when the stone is cool and the temple is quiet. Start at the main building, where a seated Buddha image is the centre of devotion, and walk clockwise around the stupa if others are doing so. Photographs on Wikimedia Commons show a stupa, a tower and several outbuildings within the compound, so allow time to wander.

Behave as at any working temple. Speak quietly, never point your feet at an image, and do not stand with your back to a Buddha for a photograph. Ask a monk or caretaker if you are unsure; most are used to visitors. If you wish to offer flowers or a lamp, buy them at the entrance and follow what local devotees do.

The temple's founding date, murals and treasures are not covered in the sources we could open, so treat this as an introduction and ask a caretaker about any history worth seeing. Combine it with St. Mary's Church for a morning that shows two faiths in one town.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and carry a shawl
  • Go in the morning for cooler stone
  • Carry small notes for offerings
  • Ask before photographing people
