The short answer

Dutch Canal (Hamilton Canal): what visitors should know first

Worth an hour as a gentle walk or boat ride, especially combined with the lagoon. Do not expect a grand monument: the interest is in the waterway, the fishing boats and local life along its banks.

History and context

The story behind Dutch Canal (Hamilton Canal)

The Hamilton Canal was built by the British between 1802 and 1804, conceived by the Surveyor General George Atkinson and named after the revenue official Gavin Hamilton, who died in 1803. It was about 14.5 km long and ran parallel to the older Dutch canal.

It was intended to drain salt water from the Muthurajawela wetlands but tides increased salinity instead. Water transport was abandoned in 1926, and restoration work began in 2012.

Why it matters

Why Dutch Canal (Hamilton Canal) is worth your time

The canal tells the story of how goods moved before roads and railways. The British built the Hamilton Canal to drain salt water from the Muthurajawela wetlands, but tides raised salinity instead. Water transport on it was abandoned in 1926 after the Puttalam to Colombo railway opened.

Its value today is local rather than monumental. Restoration began in 2012, with a first 2.5 km section completed in August 2013, and the canal remains part of the daily life of boatmen and fishing families. For visitors, it is a quiet counterpart to the churches and beaches.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start where the canal meets the town and walk a short section, watching boats, laundry lines and neighbourhood life. If you prefer to ride, ask your hotel for a canal and lagoon combination, which many operators offer. The water is slow and brown, edged with coconut palms and small houses, so the pleasure is in the pace, not in any one sight.

It helps to know the history before you go. The Wikipedia entry for the Hamilton Canal says British works ran from 1802 to 1804, from the Kelani Ganga near Hekitta to the southern edge of Negombo Lagoon at Pamunugama, parallel to and west of an older Dutch canal. Wikipedia's Negombo entry describes the wider Dutch canal network as running about 120 km towards Puttalam. Sources differ on exact length and credit, so treat the name as a local convention.

Carry water, a hat and insect repellent, particularly near dusk. Combine the canal with the lagoon in a single morning and you will have seen the waterways that shaped the town.
