Why it matters

Why Negombo Fish Market (Lellama) is worth your time

Negombo is a fishing town first and a tourist town second, and this market is where that is clearest. The catch is landed, sold and trucked out within hours, and families here have worked the same trade for generations in outrigger canoes and catamarans.

For a visitor, it explains the menus, the churches and the lagoon. It is also an honest look at an industry that feeds many households, which no hotel buffet will show you.

How to experience it

The market is the sight to see at dawn. Wikivoyage describes it as the second-largest fish market in the country, at the north end of the lagoon, with daily auctions and the busiest time in the early morning. Arrive soon after first light, when boats are unloading and traders are shouting prices. A statue of St Peter, patron saint of fishermen, is reported at the entrance.

Walk slowly and stay out of the way of porters carrying heavy loads. You will see tuna, crab and many smaller fish laid out on tables and on the ground. Wear closed, non-slip shoes. Ask before photographing people, and do not block the auction. The smell is strong, so a handkerchief or light mask helps.

Wikipedia notes that fishing typically runs from September to April, so the market is quieter in the monsoon months. If the market is not for you, a view of the harbour from the road still shows the working side of Negombo before you move on to coffee or a church.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
