Why it matters

Why Betla National Park is worth your time

Betla is Jharkhand's only national park according to Wikipedia, and it is part of the 1,129.93 square kilometre Palamu Tiger Reserve, which became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1974. The park itself covers about 226 square kilometres and was declared a national park in 1986.

For a Netarhat trip, it adds a wildlife dimension that the plateau cannot offer. It also introduces the sal forest that covers much of this region, the same landscape you glimpse from the viewpoints.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Do not try to squeeze Betla into a Netarhat half-day. Wikipedia places the park about 170 km northwest of Ranchi and about 65 km northwest of Latehar, so from Netarhat it is a long drive. Most visitors either make a very early start or stay overnight inside or near the park.

Book the safari through the official forest department arrangements. Guided jeep safaris run inside the tourist zone, and watch towers have been built for viewing. Expect to see chital, sambar, gaur and perhaps elephants, with birdlife including hornbills. Tigers exist, but sightings are never promised.

Wikipedia notes accommodation inside the forest, including lodges and log huts, but availability should be confirmed before you travel. Pair the visit with Palamu Fort, which is nearby, and check seasonal opening dates and road conditions before leaving Netarhat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book safaris through official channels
  • Check seasonal closures before travelling
  • Plan an overnight rather than a rushed day
  • Do not count on seeing a tiger
