The short answer
Oceanography Museum: what visitors should know first
A good choice for children and for rainy or very hot afternoons. Allow about an hour, check opening hours and tickets locally, and expect older, specimen-style displays rather than a modern aquarium.
History and context
The story behind Oceanography Museum
Wikipedia says the institute was founded on 14 September 1922 as a French colonial fisheries oceanography department, following a proposal by Alexandre Yersin. In 1929 it became the Indochina Oceanography Institute, with A. Krempf as its first director, and it was renamed the Institute of Oceanography in 1993.

Why it matters
Why Oceanography Museum is worth your time
Nha Trang's bay is one of the country's most important marine areas, and the institute explains why. Fishermen, divers and scientists have worked here for a century, and the specimens show the variety of the bay's coral reefs, fish and shells.
For families, it gives context to a boat trip or snorkelling day: you learn what the reefs near Hon Mun hold before you see them. It also shows the French colonial scientific tradition that helped shape the town, as the institute began after a proposal by Yersin.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Go to the museum at the institute at Cau Da, south of the centre. Wikipedia says its museum holds more than 24,000 specimens from over 5,000 marine and freshwater species, and an 18 m whale skeleton. Head to the whale first, then walk through the halls of fish, shells, corals and preserved marine animals at your own pace.
This is a research-institute museum rather than a modern aquarium, so expect labelled specimens and older displays. That suits curious children and adults who like natural history. If you want live fish, check what the grounds offer on the day; we did not verify an aquarium.
Plan about an hour and combine it with a trip to the Cau Da area or a boat tour, as the island-trip piers are nearby. The museum is a good wet-weather fallback in October and November, when boats are often cancelled.
Plan with confidence
