Nha Trang is Vietnam's best-known beach resort town, laid out along a wide curved bay with a seafront road, a long city beach and a skyline of hotel towers. It suits families who want sea, easy days and a few real sights rather than a heavy sightseeing programme. The airport is not in the town but at Cam Ranh, about 30 km south, so factor in the transfer when you plan arrival and departure days.
The town is older than its resort image. The Po Nagar towers on the hill by the Cai River were built by the Cham of the old Kauthara region, and the temple honours a goddess identified with Bhagavati and linked to Durga. That makes it a particularly interesting stop for Indian visitors, who will recognise the lingas, the Sanskrit-derived names and the brick tower form. The French doctor Alexandre Yersin settled here in the 1890s, and his house is now a small museum.
Administratively, Nha Trang is now a ward in Khanh Hoa province. Wikipedia records that the city of Nha Trang ceased to exist as a municipal unit in a national reorganisation on 1 July 2025, so older maps and guidebooks may still call it a city. Visitors will not notice any difference on the ground.
Weather shapes the trip. February to April is dry and warm, and the sea is generally calm for island tours. October and November bring the heaviest rain of the year, rough water and cancelled boats, so avoid them if you can. Summer is hot and busy with Vietnamese holiday families.
Food needs planning for vegetarians. Fish sauce and meat broth are in most local dishes, and we did not find a verified Indian restaurant. The town does have plant-based and Buddhist vegetarian places, and we list three that we checked. Read the food section before you choose your hotel.
