Ninh Binh lies about 90 km south of Hanoi, in the southern Red River Delta, where flat paddies suddenly give way to steep limestone towers. The scenery is the reason people come: boats slide along rivers and through low caves, temples sit against the rock, and the hills once sheltered Hoa Lu, the capital of the independent state of Dai Co Viet between 968 and 1010. Much of the area forms the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014.
In 2025 Vietnam merged the old Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh and Ha Nam provinces into a new, larger Ninh Binh province, with Hoa Lu ward as its capital. Visitors still talk of Ninh Binh as the old town and the countryside around Trang An and Tam Coc, and that is what this guide covers. Administrative names are changing, so expect local signs and maps to vary.
For Indian families, Ninh Binh suits a quiet two or three days after Hanoi. Boat rides are slow and the paddies are flat, but there are steps at pagodas and a demanding stair climb to the Mua Cave viewpoint. Many tourist businesses cluster around Tam Coc, which has a small but useful group of vegan and Indian restaurants, while the city centre is more local.
Plan the season. October to December is dry and mild, rice turns gold around May to June and again around September to October, and summer brings heat and heavy rain. Entry rules, fees and boat arrangements change, so treat every detail here as checked at the time of writing and confirm on the day.
