    Tam Coc

Best for: Scenery, boat trips and the widest choice of tourist restaurants

Good to know: Quiet lanes, paddy views and a cluster of homestays and small hotels. Distances between sights are short but the roads are shared with scooters and tour vehicles.

Sights in this area: Bich Dong Pagoda, Mua Cave Viewpoint, Tam Coc Boat Trip, Thung Nham Bird Park

  2. 02

Trang An and Hoa Lu area

Best for: Early boat rides and Hoa Lu

Good to know: Close to the main wharf and the ancient capital. Fewer restaurants, so ask about meals when booking.

  3. 03

    Ninh Binh city

Best for: Train arrivals and budget stays

Good to know: Local feel with the station, markets and a few vegan restaurants. It is a short drive from the main sights, so plan transport.

Sights in this area: Bai Dinh Pagoda, Cuc Phuong National Park, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Phat Diem Cathedral, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve

  4. 04

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
