Why it matters

Why Maafaru International Airport is worth your time

Maafaru changed how the atoll is visited. Before 2019, Noonu was reached by long boat rides or by seaplane to private resort islands. A runway close to the local islands allows guesthouse travellers and day visitors to reach the atoll in a fraction of the time.

For travellers from India, it is also a useful reminder of how the Maldives works: most journeys are in two or three legs, by air then by boat. Building a day of buffer into departure plans, and avoiding same-day tight connections to onward flights, is the practical way to use the airport.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Think of Maafaru as a gateway, not a sight. It is on Maafaru island and was opened on 1 December 2019. Wikipedia lists Maldivian serving Malé, Hanimaadhoo and Ifuru, so for most visitors from India the usual route is to land at Velana International Airport in Malé, change to a domestic flight, and arrive here. Confirm the current schedule with your airline.

From the airport you move on by speedboat to your resort or guesthouse; Manadhoo, the atoll capital, is about five minutes away by speedboat according to its Wikipedia entry. Your accommodation will normally arrange the transfer, so send flight details in advance and ask what happens if a flight is delayed.

Travelling with older family members, keep carry-on essentials (medicines in original packaging, a prescription note, water) in hand luggage. Domestic flights tend to have tighter baggage limits than international ones, and some prescription medicines are controlled in the Maldives, so check rules in advance.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Share flight details with your host in advance
  • Check domestic baggage limits
  • Keep medicines in hand luggage
  • Allow a buffer day before an onward international flight
