Noonu Atoll is the southern part of Miladhunmadulu Atoll in the northern Maldives, with 71 islands, 13 of them inhabited and about 12,500 residents at the 2022 census. Its capital is Manadhoo, and its main airport, Maafaru, opened in December 2019. Most people hear of it through its luxury resorts: Soneva Jani, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island and others sit on private islands inside the atoll.
The other Noonu is less photographed. Local islands such as Velidhoo, Manadhoo, Holhudhoo and Kendhikolhudhoo are working fishing and administrative communities with schools, clinics and guesthouses. Landhoo has the ruin of a Buddhist stupa, a rare trace of the islands' pre-Islamic past. Under the water, the atoll is known to divers for dense schools of fish and shark pinnacles such as Orimas Thila and Christmas Tree Rock.
For Indian families the draw is calm and privacy, not sightseeing. There is no railway and no road network between islands, so every journey is by air or boat. Alcohol is sold only on resort islands, local islands expect modest dress, and vegetarian food needs planning because dried tuna flavours many Maldivian curries and snacks.
Senior travellers should look closely at medical access. Fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé, and Manadhoo has Noonu Atoll Hospital for local needs. A resort stay with a clinic and arranged transfers is easier than a guesthouse stay, which costs less but needs more flexibility.
