Before you go

Noonu Atoll with elderly parents: what to know

  • Share your full itinerary with your resort or guesthouse so they can plan boat and flight transfers. Ask about help with boarding boats.
  • Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with a doctor's letter; some medicines are controlled in the Maldives, so check the rules in advance.
  • Only the hospitals in Malé and Hulhumalé are fully equipped, so buy travel insurance that covers local treatment and evacuation.
  • Keep outdoor time to mornings and late afternoons, and use shade, a hat and water; the island heat is steady all year.
  • Choose a resort or guesthouse with step-free paths and ask about buggies and distances to restaurants.
  • Keep at least one buffer day before an international flight in case of weather or flight changes.

Easiest first

Places in Noonu Atoll sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Kurry Leaf, Siyam World (Food and restaurants · A dinner of 1 to 2 hours) — Reached by resort jetty or boardwalk, which is flat but can be long. Ask about step-free access and a table near the entrance.
  • Landhoo Buddhist mound (Culture and craft · About 1 to 2 hours including the island walk) — Landhoo is small and flat, but the ground is uneven and mostly sandy, and there is no formal seating or shade at the mound. Go in the cooler hours and bring water.
  • Maafaru International Airport (Places to visit · Arrival and transfer: 1 to 2 hours on the ground) — A small airport, with short walking distances. Transfers onward are by speedboat, which means stepping onto a boat and handling luggage in the sea air; ask for assistance and keep bags light.
  • Manadhoo (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The island is small and flat, so walking is easy, but there is little shade at midday and pavements can be sandy. Noonu Atoll Hospital is on the island, which matters for older travellers, though serious cases still go on to Malé.
  • Taste of India, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi (Food and restaurants · A dinner of 1 to 2 hours) — Level beachfront terrace, usually accessible by resort paths. Ask for a table near the entrance and about step-free access.
  • Velidhoo (Places to visit · Half a day, or 2 to 4 nights as a base) — The island is about 1.2 km long and flat. Distances are short, but shade is patchy and boat boarding at the harbour needs care for anyone unsteady. A health centre and pharmacy exist, but fuller care is in Manadhoo or Malé.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Christmas Tree Rock (Sports · One dive of 40 to 60 minutes; a half-day with transfers) — The challenge is depth and boat handling, not walking. Divers need current certification and good health; older divers should check fitness with the dive centre first.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Orimas Thila (Sports · One dive of 40 to 60 minutes; a half-day with transfers) — This is a demanding dive: depth and current are the issues, not walking. Divers should have a recent medical check and recent dive experience. Older divers should discuss fitness with the dive centre.

Practical tips for Noonu Atoll

  • Entry rules. Indian passport holders are listed as visa-exempt for ordinary passports, but you still need onward tickets, funds, accommodation and the online traveller declaration. Check the Maldives Immigration website before you go.
  • Dress. Resorts allow beachwear, but nudity and topless sunbathing are banned everywhere. On local islands cover shoulders and knees, and wear modest swimwear in designated areas.
  • Alcohol. Alcohol is sold only at resorts, and taking it out of the resort or drinking on a local island can lead to arrest.
  • Medicines. Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with a doctor's letter. Controlled substances need extra checks, so confirm Maldivian rules in advance.
  • Medical access. Only Malé and Hulhumalé have fully equipped hospitals. Manadhoo has an atoll hospital for local needs. Buy insurance covering evacuation and diving if relevant.
  • Sea safety. Strong currents cause drownings. Swim in supervised or designated areas, follow flags and briefings, and check life jackets on small boats.
  • Food. Dried tuna is common in curries and snacks. Tell hosts about fish, onion and garlic restrictions early and carry dry snacks for boat days.
  • Transfers. Weather can delay boats and seaplanes. Keep a buffer day before an international flight and share flight numbers with your host.
