Soneva Jani: what visitors should know first

A very high-end stay for honeymoons and milestone family trips. Book months ahead, ask about transfers, and confirm dietary needs directly because the website does not state vegetarian or Jain options.

Why it matters

Why Soneva Jani is worth your time

Soneva Jani opened in October 2016, according to Wikipedia's page on the Soneva group, and a second phase called Chapter 2 followed in December 2020. It matters as one of the Maldives' newer-generation resorts in the northern atolls, built around large villas and water instead of the older bungalow format.

It also shows what Noonu Atoll is best known for internationally. The atoll's resorts are among the country's most expensive, and many guests never visit a local island. Indian families considering a splurge should weigh the cost against the dietary uncertainty: unlike some Indian-facing resorts, this one does not publish a vegetarian or Jain commitment that we could verify.

How to experience it

Soneva Jani is a private-island resort on Medhufaru, in the north of Noonu Atoll. Its website describes Beach Villas, Overwater Villas and Signature Villas, with retractable roofs in the overwater category, an outdoor cinema and a sea-to-table, garden-to-plate approach to dining. Most guests arrive by pre-arranged transfer from Malé, so book flights with a generous margin.

A stay here is built around privacy and the lagoon, so ask the resort what your villa category includes before booking: transfers, meal plan, activities and any minimum stay. The resort has a Sri Lankan and Indian specialty restaurant, Cineyaan, according to a travel-agent listing, but we could not see a menu or any statement on vegetarian, vegan or Jain cooking.

If you eat no meat, fish or onion and garlic, email the resort before you pay a deposit and ask them to confirm in writing how they handle your diet and whether kitchens are shared. Alcohol is sold at resorts only, so it is the place for it if your family drinks.
