The short answer

Vagheri Hill Trek: what visitors should know first

Go with a local guide if you are fit and want a real hill climb in Goa. The forest department lists routes from Keri and from Valpoi to the 725 m top. It is steep forest walking, not a stroll.

History and context

The story behind Vagheri Hill Trek

Vagheri, whose name is usually explained as 'abode of the tiger', is one of the three highest peaks in Goa's Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, set up in 1999 in Sattari taluka.

Why it matters

Why Vagheri Hill Trek is worth your time

Vagheri is one of a handful of Goan hills that feel like proper mountain country, and it sits in the state's northern Western Ghats rather than on the coast most visitors know. The climb links two quiet Sattari settlements with the forest above them, and shows how close real wilderness is to Goa's beaches.

The Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary has tigers, leopards and bears, and the forest department has closed several of its waterfalls to visitors in recent monsoons. A guided, quiet visit is the right way to see it.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The Goa Forest Department lists two trek routes to Vagheri, one from Keri and one from Valpoi, the small town that serves Sattari taluka. Both climb through the forest of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary to a summit of about 725 m (2,380 ft), from where the Sattari valleys and the Ghats to the east open out.

Treat it as a full day. The trail is steep in places and paths in thick forest are easy to lose, so go with a guide who knows the route. Start early, carry plenty of water and food, and be off the hill well before dark.

The forest department can be contacted through its North Goa office for trek arrangements, and runs forest rest houses at Valpoi and Keri. Check whether any route is closed for the season or because of wildlife before you set out.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go with a local guide
  • Confirm forest permission before going
  • Carry water, food and rain gear
  • Start early and finish before dark
  • Carry out all litter
