Getting around North Malé Atoll

Resorts run speedboat or seaplane transfers; the airport has a large seaplane terminal for resorts. Local islands such as Himmafushi, Huraa and Dhiffushi are reached by boat, and guesthouses can arrange transfers. Distances from Malé range from about 16 km to about 37 km, so ask for the journey time in advance.

Easy transfers to and in North Malé Atoll

  • Resort islands are flat, but the boat or seaplane transfer needs a step onto a jetty or float. Tell the resort about mobility limits before you book so staff can help at both ends.
  • Fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé. Many resorts have a doctor, but some are hours from emergency care, so buy travel insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation.
  • On local islands, expect basic clinics only, and uneven paths in sand. Ask your guesthouse about the nearest clinic and how a night-time boat transfer would work.
  • Carry a repeat prescription list, with generic names, and keep medicines in hand luggage.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
