Before you go
North Malé Atoll with elderly parents: what to know
- Resort islands are flat, but the boat or seaplane transfer needs a step onto a jetty or float. Tell the resort about mobility limits before you book so staff can help at both ends.
- Heat and humidity rarely drop. Walk before 10 am or after 4 pm, drink often and keep to shade in between.
- Fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé. Many resorts have a doctor, but some are hours from emergency care, so buy travel insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation.
- On local islands, expect basic clinics only, and uneven paths in sand. Ask your guesthouse about the nearest clinic and how a night-time boat transfer would work.
- Snorkelling is the gentlest way to see the reef. Ask for a life jacket and a guide, and avoid sites with current or boat traffic.
- Carry a repeat prescription list, with generic names, and keep medicines in hand luggage.
Easiest first
Places in North Malé Atoll sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Dhiffushi (Places to visit · A day trip or two to three nights) — The island is about 0.95 km long and 0.2 km wide, so everything is close. It is about 37 km from Malé, so the boat ride is the real effort; ask about steps and sea state.
- Himmafushi (Places to visit · A day trip or one to three nights) — The island is about 0.9 km long and 0.75 km wide, so everything is within a short walk on flat ground. There is little shade at midday, and clinics are basic.
- Huraa (Places to visit · A day trip or one to three nights) — The island is only about 0.85 km long and 0.3 km wide, so walks are short and flat. Clinics are basic, and shade is limited at midday.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Banana Reef (Places to visit · A half-day boat outing) — Boat access, wet steps and current make this demanding for older travellers. If you only want to see the reef, a calm snorkel is easier. Diving needs medical clearance.
- Kuruhinna Tharaagandu, Kaashidhoo (Culture and craft · A full day, mostly travel) — Remains are low coral-stone foundations in the open with little shade, and the journey is long. Skip it if parents struggle with boats, sun or uneven ground.

Practical tips for North Malé Atoll
- Heat and rain. Daily highs sit near 31°C all year. Rain peaks from May to December, so carry a light shower jacket and drink water often.
- Transfers. Resorts are reached by speedboat or seaplane from Velana airport. Ask the resort what the transfer involves for someone with limited mobility. If you land late, ask whether the resort can collect you or whether a night in Hulhumalé or Malé is safer.
- Dress. Outside resorts, including beaches used by locals, cover shoulders and upper legs and avoid short or tight shorts. Topless sunbathing and nudity are banned everywhere.
- Alcohol and drugs. Alcohol is available only on resort islands. Possession or intoxication on inhabited islands can lead to arrest, and drug laws are strict.
- Ramadan. Outside resorts, do not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight in Ramadan. Dates move each year, so check before you book a local island.
- Swimming safely. Strong currents cause drownings. Swim only in supervised or designated areas, heed flags and warning signs, and stay clear of boat lanes.
- Money and cards. Check which currency your resort or guesthouse quotes in, and ask what is included, since taxes and service charges can be added. Carry some cash for local islands and tips.
- Insurance and medicine. Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation cover. Carry a list of your medicines in generic names, and keep supplies in hand luggage.
