The short answer

Harishankar Temple: what visitors should know first

Go for a temple shared by Vishnu and Shiva, a stream you can bathe in and the end point of the hill path from Nrusinghanath. Allow two to three hours. The temple is manageable for older visitors; the wet rocks are not.

History and context

The story behind Harishankar Temple

A Chauhan king of Patna is said to have found the deity in the 14th century, and the temple was built on the order of Queen Durlabha Devi, wife of Maharaja Baijal Dev. A dancing Ganesha image found here dates to the early 12th century.

Why it matters

Why Harishankar Temple is worth your time

Harishankar is the southern half of the Gandhamardan pilgrimage. With Nrusinghanath facing it on the northern slope, the two temples frame a hill range that is sacred in local tradition and protected for its forests and medicinal plants. Pilgrims walk between them during the Nrusingha Chaturdashi fair.

The site combines worship and nature in a way that is typical of western Odisha's temples, with shrines set by running water. It is also a popular picnic place and a summer retreat for people from Balangir, and festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Shivaratri and the Baishakha mela fill it with local life.

How to experience it

Harishankar lies on the opposite side of the Gandhamardan range from Nrusinghanath. By road it is reached from Balangir, 81 km away on an all-weather road, while on foot it is the end of the 16 km hill path from Nrusinghanath. Harishankar Road railway station is about 32 km away, with taxis to the temple.

The temple honours both Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Shankar), which gives it its name. Beside it a perennial stream flows over a granite bed and forms cascades at different levels. Visitors bathe in the pools and slide down the smooth streaming rock, but this is best left to the young and confident. A deer park adjoins the hill nearby.

Come in the morning, see the temple first and then sit by the stream. Odisha Tourism's Panthanivas makes it possible to stay overnight, which is the best way to combine Harishankar with Nrusinghanath without rushing.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Book the Panthanivas ahead around festivals
  • Wear shoes with grip near the stream
  • Do not use the rock slide during high water
  • Use your own transport from Balangir for flexibility
  • Carry cash; few card facilities nearby
