The short answer

Nrusinghanath Temple: what visitors should know first

Go for an old forest temple with an unusual legend and a stream right behind it. Allow one to two hours. The temple itself is easy for older visitors; the steps up the hillside behind it are not.

History and context

The story behind Nrusinghanath Temple

Inscriptions credit the temple to Baijal Singh Dev, the Chauhan king of Patna, in the early 15th century. The deity is Narasimha in the form of Marjara Keshari.

Why it matters

Why Nrusinghanath Temple is worth your time

The legend told in the Odia work Nrusingha Charitra explains the unusual image. Vishnu, in the form of a cat, pursued the mouse demon Musika Daitya, who hid in a tunnel in the hill, and the god stays here to guard the spot. That story gives the temple a local character quite different from the larger Narasimha shrines of southern India.

The temple also sits at the heart of the Gandhamardan landscape. It marks the start of the pilgrim route across the hills to Harishankar, and the hills around it are protected for their medicinal plants. Huen Tsang is said to have described the area as a centre of Buddhist learning. A visit here is as much about the setting as about the shrine.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive early in the morning, when the air is cool and the courtyard quiet. The temple is about 45 feet tall, in the Kalinga deula style, with a sanctum and a jagamohan, the front hall, which has three gates each supported by four pillars. Inside, Narasimha is worshipped as Marjara Keshari, a feline form that sets this shrine apart from most Narasimha temples.

After darshan, walk round the temple to the stream that comes down the hillside behind it. The first falls, Chal Dhar and Bhim Dhar, are within about half a kilometre, and Sita Kunda is a short way further. Nearby is a garden with displays of the avatars of Vishnu and a 28 ft statue of Hanuman at its centre, a pleasant place to sit.

Dress modestly and follow the priests' guidance on photography. Monkeys gather around the temple, so keep food out of sight. Around Nrusingha Chaturdashi in April or May the temple is very crowded; at other times it is calm.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Visit early, before heat and crowds
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear
  • Keep food away from monkeys
  • Ask the priests before photographing inside
  • Expect large crowds during the April or May fair
