Why it matters

Why Nrusingha Chaturdashi Mela is worth your time

The fair is the high point of the year at Nrusinghanath and shows how much the temple means to the people of western Odisha. It celebrates the appearance of Narasimha, the protector form of Vishnu, at a shrine where he is worshipped in his rare cat-like form.

It also keeps alive the old link between Nrusinghanath and Harishankar. The pilgrim walk across the hills during the fair is one of the few times the route is walked by large numbers of people, which ties the two temples, the forest and the communities around it together.

How to experience it

The fair is held for Nrusingha Chaturdashi, the 14th day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, which falls in April or May. Local sources describe it running from Trayodashi to Purnima, so the temple is busy for several days. Thousands of pilgrims come from across western Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh, and stalls selling food, offerings and household goods spring up around the temple.

Many pilgrims use the occasion to walk the 16 km hill path across the Gandhamardan range to Harishankar, so the trail is busier than at any other time of year. If you plan to join them, go with people who know the route and carry plenty of water.

Arrive at dawn, before the heat and the biggest crowds, and plan a long midday rest. Book transport and any lodging well ahead, as nearby rooms fill quickly.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the year's date in the Odia calendar
  • Arrive at dawn to avoid the worst crowds
  • Carry water and sun protection
  • Book transport and rooms well ahead
  • Keep valuables secure in crowds
