Before you go

Nuapada with elderly parents: what to know

  • Stay in Nuapada town and make day trips; avoid sleeping in the villages.
  • Choose Patora and Budhikomna over Sunabeda if mobility is limited.
  • Start early, rest at midday and aim to be back before dark.
  • Carry water, medicines, snacks and cash; shops and pharmacies are scarce.
  • Hire a driver who knows the district roads.

Easiest first

Places in Nuapada sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Pataleswar Temple, Budhikomna (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The temple compound is small and the walking is short, but roads to reach it are rural and there are few toilets, seating or shops. Carry water and travel in a car.
  • Patora Dam and Gardens (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Level paths and garden benches make it an easy stop, but shade is patchy and facilities such as toilets and cafes are limited. Access to parts of the dam may be restricted.
  • Yogeswar (Jogeswar) Temple, Patora (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours with the dam) — The approach is short and mostly level, though steps and uneven ground near the river may need a steady arm. Shade and seating are limited, so go early in the day.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Godhosh and Beniadhus Waterfalls (Places to visit · A full day including the drive and tracks) — Not suitable for most older or frail visitors: the tracks are rough, four-wheel drive or a bike is often needed, and there are no toilets, seating or medical help along the way.
  • Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day at minimum; two days if you stay at a village or rest house) — This is a difficult outing for older or frail travellers: steep ghat roads with hairpin bends, dusty tracks, long distances without toilets, shops or medical help. Choose Patora instead unless you are fit.

Practical tips for Nuapada

  • Heat. April to June is very hot, with daytime highs near 40 degrees. Visit outdoor sights early in the morning.
  • Roads. Roads to the plateau and villages are steep, dusty and in places unrepaired. Use a sturdy vehicle.
  • Forest access. Call the Sunabeda Wildlife Division before going; gate access and rules change.
  • Money. Carry cash. ATMs and card acceptance are limited outside Nuapada town.
  • Supplies. Carry water, food, a torch and basic medicines. Shops are rare beyond the district town.
  • Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes and ask before photographing worshippers or villagers.
  • Daylight. Plan to be back at your base before dusk; forest and village roads are poorly lit.
  • Language. Odia and Sambalpuri are the main languages. A local guide helps in the villages.
