The short answer
The Grand Hotel: what visitors should know first
A good base for families and older travellers who want comfort and colonial atmosphere in the town centre. It is large and busy rather than boutique-quiet. Check rooms and heating, and non-guests should call before planning to dine.
History and context
The story behind The Grand Hotel
Sir Edward Barnes, Governor of Ceylon, had a single-storey bungalow, Barnes Hall, built in 1828. It later became a small hotel and was sold to the Nuwara Eliya Hotels Company in 1892 (the hotel's own history gives 1891 to 1892).
Expansion followed: a second floor in the 1890s, wings around 1904 and a third storey with a mock-Tudor facade in the 1930s. It was designated an Archaeological Protected Monument on 23 February 2007.

Why it matters
Why The Grand Hotel is worth your time
The hotel began as Barnes Hall, a bungalow built in 1828 as a holiday residence for Sir Edward Barnes, Governor of Ceylon. Later it became a small hotel; the Nuwara Eliya Hotels Company bought it in the early 1890s, and the building grew through additions in 1904 and a mock-Tudor facade in the 1930s. It is a protected Archaeological Monument of Sri Lanka.
It is the clearest example of why Nuwara Eliya is called Little England. Staying or taking tea here is the closest a visitor gets to the hill station's colonial social life, and the hotel's lawns and corridors still carry that atmosphere. It is also more practical than many heritage properties, with lifts, a pool and restaurants under one roof.

How to experience it
Stay here if you want the colonial atmosphere with full facilities. The hotel offers a four-acre English-style garden with a walk of about a kilometre, a Dilmah tea lounge, billiards room, spa and indoor pool, and it has several restaurants. For vegetarian and Indian travellers, the Grand Indian restaurant inside the hotel is useful.
Walk the garden in the morning when it is quiet. Dress warmly for the evening, since hill nights are cold. If you are a non-guest, call the hotel before visiting and reserve a table; do not assume afternoon tea is available without checking.
With 154 rooms and 7 suites, it is large, so choose a room position away from public areas if you prefer quiet. The hotel has a long history, and the main building's lobbies and corridors are worth a slow look. It is central, so Gregory Lake and the town are an easy drive.
