Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,868 metres in the central hill country, and the first thing most visitors notice is the cold. Founded in 1846 by the explorer Samuel Baker, it grew into the British hill retreat that people still call Little England: a lake, a racecourse, a golf course, a club, a red-brick post office and gabled houses set among the tea estates. The surrounding district is the most important place for tea production in the island.
The town is small and the sights are spread out, so plan around the cool mornings. Gregory Lake, Victoria Park and the post office can be seen on foot or a short drive. Pedro Tea Estate, Lover's Leap Falls, Hakgala Botanical Garden and Seetha Amman Temple lie a few kilometres out, and Horton Plains and World's End are a separate early-morning outing about 27 km away.
For Indian visitors there is an extra layer. The Hakgala area is tied by local tradition to the Ramayana, and Seetha Amman Temple draws pilgrims from India. The tea estates were worked largely by Indian Tamil labourers brought by the British, which is why Hindu temples and South Indian eateries are part of the town.
It works well for families and older travellers if you plan for weather and altitude. Evenings are cold in every month, rain is frequent, and the best views are early. Two or three days is enough, with a rest day built in after Horton Plains.
