The short answer
Nuwara Eliya Racecourse: what visitors should know first
Only worth planning around if your trip falls on a race meeting, mainly in April. On other days it is just a large open field in the middle of town. Check the Royal Turf Club calendar, and book accommodation early for April.
History and context
The story behind Nuwara Eliya Racecourse
The first race meeting was held in 1875, organised by the Nuwara Eliya Gymkhana Club, and meetings continued intermittently until 1900, when the present course was laid out. The track is about 1,800 metres round.
The Sports Ministry took ownership in August 2011. The Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority manages the site and the Sri Lanka Turf Club conducts the races.

Why it matters
Why Nuwara Eliya Racecourse is worth your time
The first race meeting here was held in 1875, run by the Nuwara Eliya Gymkhana Club, and the current course was laid out in 1900. It is the only horse racing venue left in Sri Lanka, and at about 1,868 metres it is described as one of the highest racecourses in the world.
The Governor's Cup was first contested in 1833 and is still run on the Sinhalese New Year. The April season is the high point of the hill station's calendar and is why Nuwara Eliya has long been busy in that month. Understanding that explains the booking pressure and the price jumps.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Check the calendar first, because this is a place you visit for an event. The main season is in April, around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when five race meetings are held. Smaller meetings are held in February, August and December. The headline event is the Governor's Cup, run on the Sinhalese New Year, around 14 April.
On a race day, arrive early, get a seat in the grandstand and watch the build-up as well as the races. The town fills with visitors in April, so book hotels and transport far in advance, and expect traffic and higher prices.
Outside race meetings the racecourse is open ground used by locals; there is little to see, so do not plan a special visit. Dress warmly, carry a rain layer and keep cash for entry and snacks. Racing involves betting, which is regulated; check the rules and your own comfort with it before you go.
