Why it matters
Why Avalanche to Devarbetta Trek is worth your time
Devarbetta takes walkers deep into the upper Nilgiri plateau, an area of shola and grassland that most visitors to Ooty never see. The habitat is home to Nilgiri langur, sambar and gaur, and is part of the wider Mukurthi landscape.
Access is controlled by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department through Trek Tamil Nadu, with small groups and trained guides. That system, set up in 2024, is meant to keep trekking safe after years in which forest trekking in the state was closed, and to direct fees to conservation and local communities.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Report at the Avalanche reception point, about 31 km from Ooty, for the morning start (9 am at the time of writing). A forest jeep takes the group about 4 km to the Cauliflower shola, where the trail begins, and another collects the group at the end point.
The route is one way and about 13 km long. It winds out of the shola onto wide grassland, then dips through further patches of untouched forest before the final climb to Devarbetta, at about 2,538 m (8,327 ft). Expect steep pulls, wet grass and muddy stretches; leech socks help in damp months.
Tigers, leopards, gaur and sambar all use this country, so the guide sets the route and pace. Start fit, carry 2 litres of water, food, a warm layer and rain gear, and be ready for mist to close the views at any time.
