Why it matters
Why Avalanche to Kolaribetta Trek is worth your time
Avalanche is one of the few places where a visitor to Ooty can walk into the high shola-grassland country that once covered the upper Nilgiris. Sambar, gaur and Nilgiri langur are seen often, and the views take in some of the range's highest ground.
The route is run by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department through Trek Tamil Nadu, which reopened forest trekking in 2024 with set routes, trained guides and small groups. Fees support conservation work and local guides, so booking officially is also the responsible choice.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Report at the Avalanche reception point, about 31 km from Ooty bus stand, for the morning start (9 am at the time of writing). A forest jeep takes the group about 4 km into the Cauliflower shola, where the walk begins. The route is 5.5 km each way, and the guide sets a steady pace.
The path climbs gently through dense shola, then breaks out onto wide grassland dotted with old wattle plantations. On a clear day you look across to Mukurthi Peak and down to the Upper Bhavani reservoir. The walk ends at the Kolaribetta tower, at about 2,625 m (8,612 ft), before returning the same way.
The weather turns quickly at this height. Carry a fleece and a rain layer even in the dry season, wear shoes with grip for wet grass, and keep to the group: tigers, leopards, gaur and elephants all use this forest.
