Why Ooty Lake is worth your time
Ooty Lake was created in the 1820s when John Sullivan, the British superintendent of the Nilgiris, dammed a stream flowing through the valley to create a reservoir and pleasure water for the emerging hill station. It was dug partly by local labour and gradually became the social heart of Ooty, where the British community rowed, held picnics and relaxed after hot work.
When the Nilgiri Mountain Railway came in 1899, the lake grew in importance as a destination for people arriving by train. Today it remains the place where Ooty comes to meet itself: locals walk before breakfast, school children play, and visitors get their first sense of the hill station's pace and character.

How to experience it
The lake has several points of entry and is most easily accessed from Charing Cross in the town centre. The standard route is to walk the eastern shore, past the Rose Garden gate, towards the dam and back, a circuit of about 3 km taking roughly 45 minutes at a gentle pace. The shading is excellent because of the eucalyptus and pine trees fringing the water.
If you have energy and time, rent a pedal boat or rowboat from one of the boathouses on the north side. The rowers are experienced and the boats stable. Being on the water gives you a different view of the tree-lined shores and the hills beyond. A one-hour ride with a rower costs less than a lunch.
Don't miss the view from the dam at the southern end if the weather is clear. From there you see the full length of the lake with the Nilgiri hills behind. Early morning is quietest; late afternoon is liveliest, when joggers, school groups and families fill the paths.
