Palamaner is a mandal headquarters in Chittoor district, on high ground at about 683 m above sea level, close to the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu borders. That position gives the town a mixed culture and a cooler, drier feel than the coast. It is not a tourist town in the usual sense, which suits travellers who like to see ordinary places and natural sights without crowds.
The main reason to come is the Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary, the only sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh set up mainly for Asian elephants. Two waterfalls lie inside it: Kalyan Revu, about 10 km north of town, and Kaigal, about 28 km away on the Kuppam side. Both are best during and after the monsoon, and neither is a developed attraction, so plan simply and ask locally before you set out.
Around the town there are temples. Mogileeswara Swamy Temple at Mogili, with three gopurams, lies on the way to Chittoor, and Kanipakam's Vinayaka temple, one of the best-known Ganesha shrines in the south, is a day trip beyond Chittoor.
For families and older travellers, Palamaner works as a quiet base for one or two days. Services are basic, hotels are simple, and a hired car is the practical way to move. Come between November and February for comfortable weather, and carry water and snacks into the forest country.
