The short answer
Periyanayaki Amman Temple: what visitors should know first
Visit if you have time after the hill and want a quieter temple in town. It is flat, easy to reach by auto and rarely as busy as the hill, except around Vijayadasami and the Aadi Fridays.

Why it matters
Why Periyanayaki Amman Temple is worth your time
Palani is often described only as a hill, but the town has its own temple life. This temple shows that Palani's religious geography extends beyond the hilltop and that the Nayak rulers invested in civic temples as well as shrines on the heights.
The festival connection to the hill temple is also telling. When the lance travels from the mountain to the town on Vijayadasami, the two temples act as parts of one ritual landscape. For visitors, this is a good place to see local devotion without the pilgrim crush.

How to experience it
Reach the temple by auto from the bus stand or the hill road; it stands in the town centre and is often called the Town Temple. The complex is spacious, with pillared mandapams in the Nayak style. The main tower rises over Murugan's shrine, which is unusual for a temple named after the goddess.
The layout follows the Somaskanda form, with Shiva, Parvati and Murugan together. Walk the circuit clockwise and look for the Gnana Dandapani sculptures on the pillars. The temple's processional vehicles, including a silver car and an ivory palanquin, are used during festivals.
On Vijayadasami, the lance of Murugan is brought down from the hill temple to this temple, a custom marking the end of Navaratri. In the Tamil month of Aadi, around July to August, special Laksharchana worship is held, and Fridays are especially crowded.
