Plan 01

1 day in Panchgani

  1. 01

Day 1: Viewpoints, strawberries and an old-school lunch

Start early at Sydney Point for the valley view in clear light, then drive to Harrison's Folly for the open plateau. Spend mid-morning at Devrai Art Village watching artisans at work. Have a late breakfast or lunch at Mapro Garden or Rustom's Strawberry Inn. After a rest, walk on Table Land in the late afternoon if energy allows, and finish with tea in the main market.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Sydney Point45–60 minutesEasyEarly morning or the hour before sunset; clear days from November to February
Harrison's Folly45–60 minutesEasyClear mornings and late afternoons; winter months for the sharpest views

Mapro Garden1–1.5 hoursEasyWinter strawberry season; weekday mornings
Rustom's Strawberry Inn45–60 minutesEasyLunch or late afternoon; strawberry season in winter

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Panchgani

  1. 01

Day 1: Town viewpoints and crafts

Begin at Sydney Point at sunrise, return for breakfast, and visit Devrai Art Village at opening time. After lunch and a rest, walk on Table Land and then stop at Harrison's Folly for the evening light. Dinner at one of the heritage hotels' restaurants if the hotel allows non-guests.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Villages and caves

Visit Bhilar Book Village in the morning and pick a few reading rooms. Continue to Rajpuri Caves, allowing time for the steps and the kunds. Return for a strawberry and cream stop at Mapro Garden and a Parsi lunch at Rustom's Strawberry Inn, then a relaxed afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bhilar Book Village1.5–2 hoursModerateDaytime in the dry months; monsoon is possible but muddy
Rajpuri Caves1–2 hours including the driveModerateDry-season mornings; mid-January to February for the Thaipoosam crowds
Mapro Garden1–1.5 hoursEasyWinter strawberry season; weekday mornings
Rustom's Strawberry Inn45–60 minutesEasyLunch or late afternoon; strawberry season in winter

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bhilar Book Village: The village is spread over lanes with some slopes and steps between reading spots. Many are small rooms with limited seating. Older visitors can choose two or three nearby sites rather than all 25.

With parents at Rajpuri Caves: The approach involves steps and uneven rock near the caves, with low entrances and limited handrails. Floors can be wet from the kunds. Older visitors should go slowly, wear non-slip footwear and skip the interiors if mobility is limited.

Day 3: Wai side and a fort view

Take a day trip towards Wai to see the Krishna ghats and temples. Fit trekkers can attempt Kamalgad Fort early in the morning with a guide; everyone else can view it from Sydney Point and spend the afternoon at leisure in town.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Sydney Point45–60 minutesEasyEarly morning or the hour before sunset; clear days from November to February

Pace: Kamalgad Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kamalgad Fort: Demanding. The trek is steep and rocky with roughly two hours of climbing, little shade and no facilities, so it is not suitable for most older travellers or anyone with knee or heart concerns. View it from Sydney Point instead.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Panchgani trip for parents and children

  • Choose viewpoints reached by car, such as Sydney Point and Harrison's Folly, and skip the long walks on Table Land if the sun is strong.
  • Fort and cave outings need care: Kamalgad is a demanding trek and Rajpuri has steps and wet floors. Pick one gentle outing per day.
  • Cottage hotels are charming but hilly. Ask for a room close to the dining area and check steps before booking.
  • Carry a light jacket in winter; evenings drop to the mid-teens and wind on the plateau feels colder.
  • In the monsoon, expect fog, heavy rain and slippery paths. Visit between October and March for comfort.
  • Take bottled water, any medicines and a small torch, and plan a rest after lunch.
