Panna travel guide

A small Bundelkhand town of royal temples and diamond lore, set beside a tiger reserve on the Ken River.

Panna is a quiet district town in northern Madhya Pradesh, best known for two things: its tiger reserve and its diamonds. The town was a Bundela capital under Chhatrasal, who rose against the Mughals and later made Panna his seat, and the temples built by his successors still anchor the old streets. The district's diamond deposits, worked by the state-owned NMDC, give the place a nickname that outlasts its small size.

Most travellers come for Panna National Park, whose open-jeep safaris run through dry forest, gorges and grassland along the Ken River. The reserve lost its tigers in the late 2000s and was restocked from other parks, which makes it one of India's better-known recovery stories. Around it you will find waterfalls such as Pandav Falls, a river sanctuary for gharials and a scatter of older sites, from a hill fort at Ajaigarh to the very early stone temples at Nachna.

Panna works best as a two-night extension to Khajuraho, which has the nearest working airport and railway station. The town itself has a handful of temples to see in a morning, including the Pranami shrine of Mahamati Prannath, Jugal Kishore and Jagannath Swami. Facilities are modest, distances can be long, and you should check park rules and temple timings locally, but the pace is gentle and the setting is genuinely different from the temple circuit next door.

What and where to eat in Panna.

Food to try in Panna

Food and restaurants

Panna is a small town and food is simple: dal, roti, vegetables and rice at local dhabas and at the lodges around the park. MP Tourism mentions Bundeli Bakhri, a tribal-inspired restaurant, and a place called Pinch of Salt, but check current status before planning a meal around either. Most visitors eat at their lodge, where meals are arranged around safari timings.

Carry water and snacks for safari mornings, which start before breakfast. If you have dietary needs, tell your lodge in advance, because options in town are limited. Drink bottled or filtered water, and avoid raw street food if you have a sensitive stomach.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Panna

Shopping

Shopping in Panna is modest. The town is known for diamonds, but rough stones are handled through official auctions rather than tourist shops, and anyone buying gems should use an established, certified seller and get a proper invoice. Wikipedia notes that diamonds are collected and auctioned each January.

For souvenirs, expect small items near the temples and the lodges around the park. Khajuraho, about an hour away, has a wider choice of crafts if you want to buy something to take home.

Choose without overthinking

Which Panna experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Core zone or buffer zone safari?

Core zones such as Madla and Hinauta are the usual choice if tigers are your priority, but permits sell out. Buffer gates such as Akola are quieter and a sensible fallback; ask your lodge which zone is working best that month.

Panna or Khajuraho as a base?

Stay near Madla or Hinauta if the safari is the main reason you came and you want short, early drives. Choose Khajuraho if you also want temples, a wider choice of hotels and the airport, accepting about an hour's drive to the park.

Winter or summer for the park?

November to February is more comfortable in an open jeep, though dawns are cold. March to June is hotter, but animals gather near water, which operators say improves tiger chances.

Ajaygarh Fort or Nachna temples for a long day trip?

Choose Ajaygarh if you are fit and want a hill fort with a lake and ruins; the district site describes a steep climb of about 45 minutes. Choose Nachna for early stone architecture, with a shorter walk but a long, remote drive.

Panna travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat

Mean daily highs reach about 41 degrees in May, so plan outdoor sights early. April to June afternoons are best spent indoors.

  2. 02

    Cold mornings

December and January lows fall to about 8 degrees, and an open jeep at dawn feels colder. Carry a jacket, scarf and gloves.

  3. 03

    Booking the safari

Safari permits, a jeep and a guide are required, and vehicle numbers are capped. Book through the state forest portal or your lodge as early as possible, especially at weekends.

  4. 04

    Monsoon

July to September brings heavy rain, with about 350 mm in both July and August. Core zones usually close, though waterfalls look their best.

  5. 05

    Getting around

A hired car and driver is the practical choice. Khajuraho is the nearest airport and rail stop, so arrange pickup in advance.

  6. 06

    Temple etiquette

Remove footwear, dress modestly and ask before photographing worshippers or inner shrines. Carry socks for hot marble in summer.

  7. 07

    Money and signal

Carry cash for small purchases and tips, as card acceptance is patchy outside lodges. Mobile signal can be weak in and around the park.

  8. 08

    Photography

Bring a zoom lens for wildlife and binoculars for birds. Follow your guide's instructions and keep arms inside the jeep.

Panna with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a jeep with the best seating available and ask about cushions; safari tracks are bumpy and dusty.
  • Pack a warm layer, scarf and hat: winter dawns in an open jeep are cold and summer afternoons are very hot.

How many days do I need in Panna?

Two nights is a good length: one safari, a morning in the town's temples and a waterfall stop. Add a day if you want to try Ajaygarh Fort or Nachna.

When is Panna National Park open?

Operators generally say mid-October to June, with core zones closed during the monsoon. Rules change, so check the state forest portal when you book.

How do I reach Panna?

The nearest working airport is Khajuraho (HJR), about 50 km away. Khajuraho and Satna are the main railheads. From either, a hired car is the easiest way in.

Will I see a tiger in Panna?

It is possible but never guaranteed. Panna also offers leopards, sloth bears, deer, crocodiles and birds, so plan the trip around the whole landscape.

Can I visit the diamond mine?

No official source confirms regular public visits to the NMDC mine at Majhgawan. A tour operator advertises a visit, so ask local operators whether permission is possible.
