The short answer

Nachna Temples: what visitors should know first

A long day trip for architecture and history enthusiasts, not for a casual visit. The site lies deep in Vindhyan forest, so travel with a driver, carry food and water and confirm road conditions beforehand.

History and context

The story behind Nachna Temples

Wikipedia says the Parvati temple is usually dated to the second half of the 5th century, though some scholars suggest the 6th century, and that the upper cella collapsed after Cunningham's visit and was later reconstructed. The Chaturmukha Mahadeva temple was largely rebuilt in the 9th century on an earlier 5th-century platform.

Alexander Cunningham first published on the site in 1885, and later scholars including Michael Meister and George Michell have studied it. Dating remains debated.

Why it matters

Why Nachna Temples is worth your time

Nachna is important because it preserves some of the oldest stone temple architecture in central India. Scholars generally date the Parvati temple to the second half of the 5th century in the Gupta period, though some suggest the 6th. It is a key site for anyone interested in how the Hindu temple form developed before Khajuraho.

The site was brought to scholarly attention by Alexander Cunningham, who published on it in 1885, and later studied by Michael Meister, George Michell and others. The remoteness that makes the trip difficult also helps the temples feel intact and unhurried. For a traveller who has already seen Khajuraho, Nachna offers an earlier chapter of the same story.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a full-day trip with a driver. Wikipedia places the site deep in forest at the entrance to a difficult valley in the Vindhya hills, about 60 km southwest of Satna and 100 km from Khajuraho, so it is far from Panna town. Carry food, water and fuel.

The Parvati temple is the main attraction. It is a two-storey stone temple with a square sanctum, with river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna flanking the entrance and carved perforated windows showing dancing and music-making figures. Look at the stone work slowly, since it is often described as among the earliest surviving stone temples in the region.

The Chaturmukha Mahadeva temple has a four-faced lingam and a curved spire of about 40 feet. It was largely rebuilt in the 9th century on an earlier platform. Photograph carefully and respect worshippers, since the site is also a pilgrimage place known as Chaumukhnath.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a driver and confirm road conditions
  • Carry food and water, as facilities are minimal
  • Start early and return before dark
  • Respect worshippers at the Chaumukhnath shrine
  • Check ASI access rules locally
