Panvel is the first town of Raigad district as you leave Mumbai, and most people know it as a place to change trains or buses. That is its real strength as a base. It sits where the Harbour, Central and Konkan Railway routes meet, and highways to Pune, Goa and Alibaug pass through it, so a day out to the hills is rarely more than an hour away.
The town itself is older than the new townships around it. Records describe it as a trading place about 300 years old, once known for its rice market and for land and sea routes under the Marathas, Mughals, Portuguese and British. A municipal council was set up in 1852, and the Panvel Municipal Corporation was formed in 2016. Traces of that older life survive in the lanes of the old town, including a synagogue that dates to 1849.
The main reason to come is Karnala. The hill fort, with its needle-like basalt pinnacle, sits inside Maharashtra's first bird sanctuary, only about 10 to 12 km away. Further afield are Prabalgad and Kalavantin for serious trekkers, and Matheran, the car-free hill station, for a slower day out.
Panvel itself is not a sightseeing town and is best treated honestly as a practical gateway. The weather is humid for much of the year, the monsoon is very heavy, and the best months are November to February. Plan around that, start early, and use the town for rest, food and onward transport.
