The short answer

Shivalik Fossil Park, Suketi: what visitors should know first

Good for children and curious adults, with a museum and outdoor models. It lies in Sirmaur's Saketi area, but road distance from Paonta Sahib is not documented in the sources checked, so ask your driver. Combine it with Nahan or Renuka rather than making a separate trip.

History and context

The story behind Shivalik Fossil Park, Suketi

Wikipedia says the Geological Survey of India discovered the site in 1969 and that the park was set up with the Government of Himachal Pradesh on 23 March 1974, when it was also notified as a National Geological Monument. The park covers about 15 square kilometres, largely forested.

The Siwalik Fossil Museum opened in May 2014 on the premises.

Why it matters

Why Shivalik Fossil Park, Suketi is worth your time

The Siwalik hills are one of the world's richest fossil beds for large mammals of the Plio-Pleistocene, and this park is a rare place where you can see that story in a family-friendly format. The Geological Survey of India discovered the site in 1969 and notified it as a National Geological Monument in 1974.

For a trip centred on Sikh pilgrimage, it offers something unexpected: the deep time of the same foothills. It also suits grandparents travelling with children, because the models explain themselves without much reading.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the outdoor models. The park has six life-size fibreglass models of extinct animals in a recreated landscape, including a sabre-toothed cat, a giant tortoise, giant proboscideans and a four-horned giraffe called Sivatherium. They make a good photograph with children.

Then go into the Siwalik Fossil Museum, which opened in May 2014 on the premises. It displays fossil jaws and skulls, turtle shells, fish and crocodilian remains, early stone tools and antiquities collected by the nineteenth-century geologist Proby Cautley.

Because the park is some distance from Paonta Sahib, combine it with a trip to Nahan or Renuka Lake. Ask your driver for the road time and confirm opening hours before you set off.
